Amy Goodman, Left Gatekeeper

By Scott Loughrey

open article in new window
The Left Gatekeepers

[Editor's Note: This essay is excerpted from Chapter 5 of Barrie Zwicker's book, Towers of Deception. Barrie squarely addresses the issue of Left Gatekeepers, those wonderful and sensitive souls of the Left who bring us the 'real story' on alternative radio. These include most of the regulars I hear over the only alternative FM radio station available here in southern California, Pacifica's Radio KPFK out of Los Angeles. Amy Goodman, Lila Garrett, Sonali Kolhatkar, David Basarmian, Howard Zinn, and Noam Chomsky are but a handful of the more prominent names. What we hear from Chomsky, Zinn, and even Bill Moyers, are sublime and poignant commentary on the barbarities of our day- from the heartless profiteering by corporate fat cats to the incalculable misery imposed on the people of Afghanistan and Iraq by right wing 'neo cons' bent on ever- greater profits from oil, but we don't hear ONE word about 911 being an Inside Job. We don't hear one word about Chemtrails. We hear nothing of Rex 84, FEMA concentration camps, or any discussion of the more than 133 two-mile deep underground city/bases located all over America which every state governor and every member of congress has a ticket to enter. We hear zero criticism of the majority in congress who have voted for legislation or who sponsored bills which encouraged the hordes of illegal aliens to pour into this country from our southern border and deprive Americans of fair wage jobs, while saddling American taxpayers with the cost of incarceration, medical care, and schooling for roughly 32 million illegals. What we hear from Left Gatekeepers is what the Illuminati WANTS us to hear from a thoroughly controlled "alternative" news source ...Ken Adachi]

The Gatekeepers of the So-Called Left
Tuesday, May 03, 2005
By Charles Shaw

Comment by Shiu Hung:

While this article was written by Mr. Shaw back in 05, the issue at hand is crucial to this day, to broaden the understanding of how the left media is being used to further neo-liberal/conservative's agenda in the US, via influence through corporate foundation fundings of the left media. Of course, the left media gatekeepers will continue to deny that the corporate blood money has no influence over their journalism work.

Amy Goodman recently interviewed third-party presidential candidate Ralph Nader on her national syndicated show DN, Inc., after months of silence on Mr. Nader's campaign. Some Amy Goodman worshippers raved about this interview afterwards. But upon careful review of this interview, one can see that she had no intention of giving Mr. Nader a fair amount of time to expand on his platform. The mainstream media have mostly ignored him since he entered the race. When they do cover his campaign, the time spent with him is minimal, and usually full of sound bites and hyperbole attacks (spoiler). Considering that Amy Goodman's mantra is "go where the silence is", she would have no problem giving Mr. Nader all the time he needs to promote his alternative views on her DN since the mainstream media is doing the dirty work for wall street. But so far, he's been on her program only once since he entered the presidential race. It appears that Ms. Goodman is also ignoring Mr. Nader. Could it be that she doesn't want to offend her 'cash cow' wall street foundations?

Since 9/11/01, it has been documented that she had received a program grant from the Ford Foundation to investigate the issue. Thus far, she has remained steadfast in repeating Bush's lie about the 19 hijackers. There's evidence to refute the 19 hijackers propaganda, but she remains committed to perpetuate Bush's lies. How could that be from someone who continues to claim her program is cutting edge, and that she 'goes where the silence is' in her investigative journalism work? It's all about empire building for DN, Inc., isn't it? Perhaps between now and November, she may jump on board the Democratic Party "ABM" gravy train (Anybody but McCain) the Democratic Leadership Council/Democratic National Committee would have us blindly accept. Considering the little time and effort she has put into the recent Nader interview, she has already accepted the Democrat's ABM treaty?

Global Research Editor's note

This incisive article by Michael Backman outlines the relationship of the Dalai Lama and his organization to US intelligence.

The Dalai Lama has been on the CIA payroll since the late 1950s. He is an instrument of US intelligence.

An understanding of this longstanding relationship to the CIA is essential, particuarly in the light of recent events. In all likelihood US intelligence was behind the protest movement, organized to occur a few months prior to the Beijing Olympic games.

When will Amy Goodman on Democracy Now, Inc. start doing her self-proclaimed "exclusive" coverage on the Health Care Crisis issue? The reason she hasn't may be because the future of her empire is beholden to the money interest behind her corporate fundings, which may have direct interlocking workings to the health insurance industriies. Therefore, this website will devote time to this very important issue.

Refuting the lie, a response to Popular Mechanics: debunking 9/11 myths
By Craig Schlanger
Online Journal Contributing Writer

Sep 25, 2006, 00:59

Comments by Shiu Hung:

Amy Goodman of Democracy Now, Inc. just don't get it, or is she in denial? Worse, is she working for the US establishment and pretending to be a 'cutting edge' alternative media journalist to mislead the 'left'? For me, she is no longer trustworthy regardless of how many people in the progressive sector say that she is doing a wonderful job on her reporting. Its more like 'the blind leading the blinds.'

During her recent 9/11 5th aniversary interview with the editor of Popular Mechanics and producer of Loose change, she did nothing to convince the enlightened that she has come around concerning the truth of 9/11. Throughout the interview, she did not challenge Popular Mechanics' propaganda, while their analysis has been refuted by the 9/11 truth movement researchers to be disinformation and coverup. Amy Goodman's continuing silence with no attempt to expose the 9/11 official lie is deafening to our psyche. Appearantly, she is still stuck on the 19 hijackers as the prime suspects of the attack, even when evidences have shown that at least 6 of the alleged hijackers are still alive. Furthermore, non of the flight manifest have shown any passengers with Arabic names. Over the last 5 years, while Amy Goodman have reported about 9/11, she always referred to the official narrative as her main source, she never question the fact that Bush was able to named all the names of the hijackers not more than 2 hours after the attack while claiming our government had no idea that the alleged terrorists would use airliners as missles, boggles the mind. Considering that Bush's pretext on the 'war on terror' is all based on a lie, she has not done anything to deconstruct the false pretext. With thousands of innocent people dying, and almost 3,000 dead US soldiers resulting from US military incalcitrance in Afghanistan and Iraq; and our civil liberties are almost non-existence; and most of our prescious tax dollars are paying for the Neo-con's illegal wars while our own infracture is failing, she is still behaving no different than FOX or CNN in her reporting. Yet, her 'haven't a clue' followers still consider her a 'crown jewel' in the alternative media milieu. They are still claiming she is doing an excellent job in her reporting. What's with these people, don't they know they are being led down the path of annilation?

To Amy Goodman, you may fool some people once, but you can't continue to fool us with your 'I go where the silence is in my reporting' lie. It's too obvious at this point that you are intentionally misleading your supporters.

9/11: The Myth and the Reality

DAVID RAY GRIFFIN (Authorized Version) 30mar2006

Notes: This lecture was delivered March 30, 2006, to a sell-out crowd of over 800 people at Grand Lake Theater in Oakland, California for Progressive Democrats of the East Bay. Over 100 people were unable to enter because the seating capacity had been reached. Abbreviated versions of it were given in San Francisco for the Democratic World Federalists on April 2 and the Commonwealth Club on April 3.

Comments by Shiu Hung:

Take heed, Amy Goodman, do humanity a favor for a change, and invite David Ray Griffin on your Democraccy Now. If you do decide to interview him, please don't 'sandbag' him by having Norman Soloman or David Corn on at the same time, and if you must, please play fair and allow Griffin a chance to flesh out his thesis. It's time to redeem yourself and your fellow gatekeepers. What Griffin and others has to offer is THE 'cutting edge', and if you are the 'cutting edge' of investigative journalism -- as you often claim -- and your mantra 'I go where there's silence', well, go there, will you, instead of conducting yourself the 'mighty wurlitzer' for the criminal elements at our nation's capital.

Comments by Maureen Primerano and Shiu Hung:

While Mr. Abrahamson's critique of the leftgatekeeping issue is on target. The piece is too general and lengthy; using 'broad brush' strokes in which he makes sweeping generalizations on a number of issues throughout the piece. He tries to cover too many issues in one piece without substantiive references and factual clarification. For example, his position on Peak Oil is debatable. It would be useful to elaborate more on Amy Goodman in exposing her role in the left media gatekeeping phenomena.

Excerpt from article:

.........The successor government, comprising principal members of the opposition, usually selected by Western governments or their agents, is invariably pro-Western and pro-investment, and, having climbed to power on a ladder bought and paid for by Western imperialism, sets about discharging its obligations to its benefactors by overhauling the economy to mortgage it to Western banks and corporations. The parliamentary opposition, activist youth groups and pro-opposition media, angelized as "democratic" and "independent" in the Manichean manner of these operations, operates on lavish budgets furnished by such pro-imperialist organizations as the Soros, Ford, Carnegie and Rockefeller foundations and imperialist governments and their agencies, including the US National Endowment for Democracy and USAID. These foundations and agencies claim to be in the business of promoting democracy and civil society abroad, but exist to promote parties and movements sympathetic to advancing the financial and economic interests of Western capital. It's no surprise that one of the first orders of business of the newly installed Democratic Opposition of Serbia, swept to power by US-backed youth activists who challenged the first round of the post-terror bombing elections in Yugoslavia, in which the Socialist candidate Slobodan Milosevic came second, and was due to advance to a run-off, was to begin the process of dismantling Serbia's socially-owned economy and putting it up for sale.
Together, this apparatus of youth groups, "independent" media and the pro-privatization, parliamentary opposition is christened pro-democracy, in contradistinction to the government, which is denounced as anti-democratic, authoritarian and repressive. This provides the justification for massively interfering in the electoral affairs of the target country, not as an exercise in tilting elections in favor of Western economic and financial interests, which it truly is, but as selflessly performing good deeds abroad in promoting the spread of democracy, which it assuredly is not.

Comments by Shiu Hung:

It is evident that Soros and his gang of corporate funders are doing exactly the same thing here inside the US as part of their ongoing process of dismantling resistance from the so-called left. "Alternative media" institutions such as Democracy Now, Inc. and Institute for Public Accuracy -- two out of many -- are actively funded by these same foundationss which funds the so-called 'democracy movement' throughout the world as described by Stephen Gowans and William Blum. Analysis such as theirs will never get exposures on DN, Inc. Amy Goodman of DN, Inc. and Medea "Media" Benjamin may pontificate about 'media' reform but their effort is nothing more than smoke screen and deception.

The Suicide of New Left Review

by Boris Kagarlitsky

Comments by Alex Constantine

"Tariq Ali, whose voice is frequently heard on the
Pacifica network, is an editor at the NEW New Left Review,
a once-radical journal that has undergone a marked shift
from the editorial policies of old. The point of the
commentary below is that the character of the
New Left Review completely changed in the year 2000.
For 40 years, "discussions of fundamental importance
revolved around views expressed there," but "times change,
and so do fashions. As a counterweight to utopian calls
for changing society" (is this undesirable?),
"and to hopes of revolution," (undesirable?),
"Perry [leading editor] offers 'uncompromising
realism'.

What is the essence of this realism?
ACCEPTING THE TRUTH OF ANY GARBAGE AT ALL,
PROVIDED IT IS PUBLISHED IN THE WALL STREET
JOURNAL." This is the main concern that I and others
on the left have with the work of Tariq Ali and his
academic colleagues at NLR - refusing to view
politics from any other vantage point than the
establishment's own.

If constricting the scope of discussion led to
"the suicide of the NLR," will it not have a similar
effect on the left as a whole if Ali and others
like him, adopting the same "uncompromising realism,"
succeed in making it a staple of left-wing activism?"
